Its' discovery chart contains a close applying conjunction between Chiron and Pluto.
It has an orbit of 76.26 years, an inclination to the ecliptic of 6.76841, and an orbital eccentricity of 0.46285227.
The elongated orbit sends it out past Uranus at aphelion (26.30 AU), and just inside Saturn's orbit at perihelion (9.66 AU). Here is diagram showing is orbit around its last perihelion in October 1973.
Its orbit is only a few years less than that of Uranus (84 years). This gives Aphidas an interesting orbital resonance with Uranus of 11:10. The way this works out is that for long periods of time the two are travelling at similar rates, so if they are in aspect it could continue for quite a long time. On the other hand, they can go through a period where they have no aspect between them for quite a long duration.
A case in point is the Uranus/Aphidas conjunction. Let's look at a the 600-year period from 1700-2300.
It might be interesting to look at events around the time of the most recent conjunction (23 November 1815) at 6 Sagittarius 08, since that could be considered the start of the current Aphidas/Uranus cycle. (The Napoleonic Wars, which had lasted for 12 years, came to an end shortly after on November 20.)
Basically, Aphidas, exhausted from attacking and raping several women, and drunk from too much wine, passed out, and was killed in his sleep. His executioner, Pirthous, saw this as fit punishment for his crimes.
The meaning of the name Aphidas is not certain, but most likely meant, "Not sparing", as even this centaur, fallen asleep, was not spared from death.
The following people have a close conjunction of Aphidas with a natal planet:

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon researchers say they have successfully placed jellyfish genes into monkey embryos.
SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) - Stubborn bolts and a storage lid that wouldn't shut on the Hubble Space Telescope forced the second-longest spacewalk in NASA history. Working in orbit 370 miles above the Earth, Discovery astronauts John Grunsfeld and Steven Smith struggled Wednesday to replace broken gyroscopes that have kept the $3 billion observatory blind since Nov. 13.
(AP)Scientists say they have found a way to produce photographic film that is 10 times more sensitive to light - an advance that could make true-to-life pictures of candlelight dinners possible without a flash or muted colors.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) New rules to allow U.S. meat plants to use low levels of irradiation to kill deadly bacteria on raw ground beef, steaks and pork chops will go into effect on Feb. 22, Agriculture Department aides said on Tuesday.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) NASA's Galileo space probe captured new images of a fiery lava fountain spurting high above the surface of Jupiter's moon, Io, the U.S. space agency said on Friday.
After coexisting uneasily for 50 years in a state of war and for the last four years in cold silence, Israel and Syria have agreed to agree. President Clinton announced that the two countries would begin intensive and accelerated peace talks Jan. 3 at a site near Washington, to be determined.
Monsanto Co., which has vowed to create sustainable agriculture through the use of genetically engineered crops, was hit with a class-action lawsuit by antitrust lawyers who claim that Monsanto rushed genetically engineered corn and soybean seeds to the marketplace without testing them for safety.
Another place to derive possible meanings for a new body is from its discovery degree, especially if you delve into the Sabian Symbols. Aphidas was found in the 27th degree of Cancer. Lynda Hill gives this as the symbol:
This is a very emotion-provoking image. Aphidas will not be just a little minor planet that goes unnoticed.Click here Aphidas, to find out how to discover where your Amycus is.
