BIENOR

Bienor. In size, it resembles Chiron, but that is where the similarities between those two end.

It's orbit, however, is very similar to that of Chariklo. I suspect that we may find that these two bodies have some similarities in their meanings:

PerihelionAphelionOrbit
Bienor13.152519.781866.8 yrs
Chariklo13.077518.65863.2 yrs

SIXTY-SIX

Is Bienor tied in to temperature changes on earth in some way? There is a lot of evidence of a 66+ year temperature cycle where the temperatures increase for 33 years, then decrease for the next 33 years. I'll return to Bienor's cycle in a moment.

Let's look at the eccentricity of Bienor's orbit, which is about 0.201.

The eccentricity of an orbit is a measure of how 'circular' an orbit is, with 0 representing circular, and 1 representing a straight line. Venus and Neptune, for example, have orbits nearly circular (0.007, 0.009 respectively.) These two bodies are often talked about as sharing a connection of some kind, and some even feel that Neptune is a higher octave of Venus.

Bienor's eccentricity is quite similar to that of the planet Mercury, 0.206. Does Bienor share a connection to Mercury?

Planets have first-order cycles, of course. That's when a planet has made one complete cycle and is ready to start another one. But there is also a 2nd-order cycle which occurs when a planet conjoins the Sun at the planet's node (usually it's north node.) For Mercury this cycle begins at the inferor conjunction. How long is this cycle? 66 years!

SABIAN

Bienor also has something in common with another Centaur, Pelion. They were both discovered in the tenth degree of Aquarius. The Sabian Symbol for that degree is "A popularity that proves to be fleeting." It will be interesting to see how this manifests for each of these bodies.

DISCOVERY

It was discovered on August 27, 2000 at 3 Pis 30 and was originally called 2000 CQ243. It's orbit has an inclination of 20.771.

MYTHOLOGY

The name Bienor means "strong man." In the one myth I could find, he was definitely a strong Centaur. And, like many of the other Centaurs, we find Bienor attending Pirithous' wedding, and (of course) taking part in the battle with the Lapiths.

Several Centaurs had already been slayed, many by Theseus, and one named Aphareus, in his rage, sought to avenge their deaths and kill Theseus by hurling a rock he had torn from the mountainside. But, as he tried, "Theseus caught him with his oaken club and broke the massive bones of his elbow. Having neither time nor desire to inflict further injury on his worthless body, he leaped onto tall Bienor's back, unused to carrying anything but its owner, and, pressing his knees into the centaur's flanks, and clutching the mane with his left hand, he shattered the face, the mouth uttering threats, and the solid temples, with his knotted club."

The photo at the top of this page is of a classic sculpture by Antoine-Louis Barye entitled "Theseus combatting the Centaur Bienor."

That's it for the mythology. Not a lot to draw upon here....which may be a good thing, for we'll have to discern Bienor's influence by studying it without preconceptions.

ASTROLOGY

On Amable's blog, Transneptunian Astrology, there are some interesting observations about Bienor: "This Centaur is conected to the self-organization of elements in a chaotic system. That means sincronicity or unusual conections of destiny between people or objects, like in the movies "Serendipity" (2001), "Only You" (1994), "Final Destination" (Part 1, 2000; Part 2, 2003; Part 3, 2006; Part 4, 2009), at the end of the movie "What lies beneath" (2000), "Pay It Forward" (2000), "The Perfect Storm" (2000), "Intersection" (1994) and "Jaws" (1975). Rumiko Takahashi (writer of the japanese manga "Ranma 1/2") has Bienor (conjunct Cyllarus) in Cancer in the Crossing Point of the Age Progressions (Moon-Node Horoscope / Basis Horoscope).

BIENOR IN ACTION

On October 12, 2011, at 2:05:43 am GMT, there was a Full Moon at 18 Aries 24. The first thing one might notice is that at that time, the Sun was conjunct Saturn's position of 19 Libra 57, which already makes it a pretty potent Lunation. But very close to the Moon we also find Bienor at 18 Aries 53 R.

Bienor and Saturn had been doing the opposition dance (moving in and out of opposition) for about a year prior to this lunation, starting right around the time the so called "Arab Spring" began. The above lunation occurred a week following the third exact Saturn/Bienor opposition, with two more such oppositions to come in 2012.

Check back in a few weeks, I'll have more to say on this event.

When a planet, or Centaur, reaches its station, its influence is concentrated, magnified, more intense. Here is a list of all of Bienor's stations for the past century. Were any of these conjunct, square, or opposition a planet in your chart? If so, can you relate this to any events that occurred in your life at that time?

Now, let's look at it's conjunctions with major planets.

Bienor & Uranus

In the past 200 years, Bienor has only been in conjunction with Uranus one time, October 5, 1964 at 12 Virgo 24. What events happened on or near that date?

  • September 27: The Warren Commission released its official findings, stating that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the killing of President John Kennedy. This became one of the most controversial documents, stirring up major consipiracy theories for years to come.
  • October 1: The Free Speech Movement launched at University of California, Berkley
  • October 5: Twenty-three men and 31 women escape to West Berlin through a narrow tunnel under the Berlin Wall.
  • October 12: The Soviet Union launches the Voskhod 1 into Earth orbit as the first spacecraft with a multi-person crew and the first flight without space suits
  • October 14: Nikita Khrushchev (who ranted at the USA "We will bury you!") is deposed as leader of the Soviet Union; Leonid Brezhnev and Alexei Kosygin assume power.
  • October 16: People's Republic of China explodes an atomic bomb, making it the 5th nation to become an atomic power...and changing the world political dynamics.
  • November 9: British House of Commons votes to abolish the death penalty for murder in Britain.

And here are a few noted people born on or near the date of this conjunction:

  • Keanu Reeves (actor)
  • Rosie Perez (actress)
  • Trisha Yearwood (country singer)
  • Bonnie Hunt (actress)
  • Stephan Jenkins (lead singer, Third Eye Blind)
  • Janeane Garofalo (actress)
  • Robby Takac (vocals/bass, Goo Goo Dolls)
  • Matthew Sweet (singer guitarist, Thorns)
  • Sam Brown (singer)
  • Graham Crabb (drummer, Pop Will Eat Itself)
  • David Ryan [drummer, Lemonheads]
  • Jim Sonefild (drums and vocals, Hootie & The Blowfish)
  • Colm O'Ciosoig (drummer, My Bloody Valentine)
  • Dana Plato (actress)
  • Calista Flockhart (actress)

Bienor and Saturn

Unlike it's relationship with Uranus, Bienor was in exact conjunction with Saturn four times in the past two centuries. Let's look at a few of the events around those conjunctions:

  • September 27, 1833, at 1 Libra 35
    • September 29: the infant Isabella II becomes Queen of Spain, under the regency of her mother, Maria Cristina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Her uncle Don Carlos, Conde de Molina challenges her claim, beginning the First Carlist War.
  • March 29, 1882, at 10 Taurus 56
    • March 22: Polygamy is outlawed by the U.S. Congress
    • March 24: Robert Koch announces the discovery of the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis)
    • April 3: Old West outlaw Jesse James is shot in the back and killed by Robert Ford for a $5,000 reward
  • Feb 22, 1936, at 11 Pisces 35
    • February 26: Hitler introduces Ferdinand Porsche's "Volkswagen"
    • February 29: Franklin D. Roosevelt signs 2nd neutrality act
    • March 7 Hitler breaks Treaty of Versailles, sends troops to Rhineland
  • Feb 16, 1991, at 1 Aquarius 06
    • February 13: Syria tells Germany they are ready to recognize Israel

And here is a list of people born with a close Bienor/Saturn conjunction:

  • Benjamin Harrison was US President. He pushed for the Sherman Antitrust Act, the first bill ever to attempt to limit the power of America's giant corporations, and endorsed two bills designed to prevent southern states from denying African Americans the vote.
  • Alfred Nobel, Swedish chemist, engineer and the inventor of dynamite. In his last will, he used his enormous fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes.
  • John Barrymore (actor)
  • Leopold Stokowski (orchestra conductor)
  • J. Michael Bishop, an immunologist and microbiologist who won the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on retroviral oncogenes. Working with Harold E. Varmus in the 1980s, he discovered the first human oncogene. Their findings allowed the understanding of how malignant tumors are formed from changes to the normal genes of a cell. These changes can be produced by viruses, by radiation, or by exposure to some chemicals.
  • Troy Donahue (actor)
  • Doug Kershaw (Fiddler/singer)
  • Alan Alda, an actor best known for his portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce in the television show M*A*S*H*. However, he almost turned down the role because he did not want war to be a "backdrop for lighthearted high jinks... I wanted to show that the war was a bad place to be." He only agreed to take the part when his contract was ammended to include a clause that at least one scene of every episode must take place in the operating room while surgery occured, so that the horrors of war would never be sugar coated.
  • Burt Reynolds (actor)
  • Barbara Jordan was the first Black woman to serve in the US Congress from the South, and sponsored bills that championed the cause of poor, and disadvantaged people.
  • Dean Stockwell (actor)
  • Marion Barry, controversial politician. He was Mayor of Washington, DC for 12 years, then was forced to leave due to an arrest and conviction on drug charges. After that, however, he was again elected to the city council, and then again elected to Mayor.
  • Mickey Gilley (country singer)
  • F.W. deKlerk, South African leader who brought Apartheid to an end in that country
  • Ursula Andress (actress)
  • Bonnie Kathleen Wright (actress famous for her role in the Harry Potter films as Ginny Weasley)

Bienor and Pluto

I found only four Bienor/Pluto conjunctions since 1800. The first, July 24, 1884, was only days before the cornerstone for Statue of Liberty was laid on Bedloe's Island (New York City), a statue that became a major symbol for many, many years thereafter. The position was 1 Gemini 55.

Actress Billie Burke was born around this time. Do you think Bienor helped her to play the "Good Witch" in the Wizard of Oz?

The second conjunction occurred November 7, 1884 at 1 Gemini 28. A few days before it was exact, Timisoara, Romania became the first town of Europe with streets illuminated by electric light. From there, it didn't take long before one city after another in Europe began to follow suit.

The third conjunction was April 12, 1885 at 0 Gemini 47.

  • April 4, 1885, the Protocol for the Suspension of Hostilities between France and China was signed, formally ending the war.
  • On March 18, 1885, when Bienor and Pluto were a little over a degree apart, a large group of dissatisfied MĂ©tis (one of three recognized Aboriginal peoples in Canada) took up arms against the government of Canada and declared their own provisional government. (This is referred to in history books as the North-West Rebellion, the North-West Resistance or the Saskatchewan Rebellion). Fearful that the rebellion would stir up other revolts throughout the Northwest Territories, the government sent a large military force to suppress it, but surprisingly it was not an easy task, with the rebels actually winning some of the battles into the month of April, when the conjunction was exact. The revolt was finally crushed, the war ended, in mid-May, with Bienor and Pluto still less than 2 degrees apart.

The fourth was much more recent, August 21, 1965, at 15 Virgo 28.

  • August 6, 1965. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the new voting rights bill, which gave the Federal Government the power to oversee voter registration, and voting. This effectively put an end to both bureacratic impediments, and threats of harassment, intimidation, economic reprisals, and physical violence, when African Americans in some Southern areas tried to register to vote. This led to a huge increase in their voter registration (for example, 5% of African Americans in Mississipi were registered to vote before the bill; within three years of the signing, over 60% were registered.)
  • August 11-15, 1965, there was a huge race riot in Los Angeles. 34 persons killed, 1,032 injured, more than 600 buildings were damaged or destroyed with a property loss estimated at over $40 million. In some ways it is very reminiscent of stories of the Centaurs losing control. For more info, you may want to read 144 Hours in August 1965
  • August 15, 1965, The Beatles had a huge concert at New York's Shea Stadium. 56,000 people attended, and as you may imagine, things did not go smoothly. 115 people, mostly young girls, had to be given medical treatment for both minor ailments, and for hysteria. Twelve persons were removed to the hospital, and police had to find friends and relatives of at least 20 lost youngsters. During the performance, about a dozen boys and girls raced onto the field and were quickly subdued by the more than 250 special police on duty for the performance. To add to their burden, police had to check out three bomb scares during the performance.
  • August 21, 1965, astronauts Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad blasted into orbit on their eight-day Gemini 5 endurance flight, breaking the existing five-day endurance mark established by the Russians.
Here is a list of some other noted individuals, in addition to Billie Burke, who had a close Bienor/Pluto conjunction:

  • Damon Runyon was an author best known for his short stories celebrating the world of Broadway in New York City that grew out of the Prohibition era. He spun tales of gamblers, petty thieves, actors and gangsters, based on real life individuals. (His best friend was mafia accountant Otto Berman, until Otto died in a mob hit.) He was also very much a fan of sports, especially boxing, and it is he who gave boxer James J. Braddock the nickname of "The Cinderella Man."
  • Eleanor Roosevelt (wife of President F.D.Roosevelt)
  • Arthur Murray (dancer, founder of a school of dancing)
  • Gabby Hayes (actor)
  • Otto Klemperer (orchestra conductor)
  • Slash (guitarist, Guns N' Roses)
  • J.K. Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter series. Interesting how the girl who plays Ginny in the movie versions also has a close Bienor aspect.
  • David Robinson (basketball player)
  • Steve Gorman (drummer, Black Crowes)
  • Marlee Matlin (actress)
  • Erik Dahlgren (drummer, Wannadies)
  • Annie Holland (Elastica)
  • Shania Twain (singer)
  • Craig McLachlan (actor, singer)
